Facts about Jack fruit

The largest tree fruit in the world, jackfruit -- sometimes called "jak fruit" or "jak" -- can be up to 3 feet long and 20 inches wide. Just one fruit can weigh as much as 110 pounds. But you're not alone if you haven't heard of it.

While jackfruit first appeared in the rain forests of India, farmers now grow it in many parts of the world, including Thailand, Australia, Africa, Brazil, and the Philippines. Only in recent years has jackfruit started to become well known in the U.S.

The rind of a jackfruit is green or yellow and spikey. Although it gives off a smell of rotting onions when it's ripe and ready to eat, the pulp inside smells and tastes far better: like a cross between pineapple and bananas. You can eat the seeds, too. And a jackfruit has plenty of them -- up to 500. Each can reach an inch and a half in length.

There are two main types of jackfruit. One is small and mushy. It tastes sweet, but it's slimy. The other type of jackfruit has crisp, crunchy flesh that's not as sweet.

But now India, the world's biggest producer of jackfruit, is capitalising on its growing popularity as a "superfood" meat alternative - touted by chefs from San Francisco to London and Delhi for its pork-like texture when unripe.

  • However, jackfruit doesn’t come from the ground ready to eat (or covered in tasty sauces like the versions we tried). In fact, jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit on the planet. Individual jackfruits can grow to be up to 100 pounds. On the outside, the fruit is a little scary looking with a tough, bumpy exterior.
    • Eating jackfruit is like eating a delicious blend of pineapple, mango and banana. However, there is one catch: it is very challenging to cut open! If jackfruit is new to you, have no fear.
      • One reason jackfruit has become so popular is because of its versatility, especially as a replacement for meat, pulled pork being its most common use.

Uses of Jackfruit

People eat the fruit and seeds of jackfruit tree as food or as medicine. Jackfruit is taken by mouth as an aphrodisiac or for diabetes. Jackfruit paste is applied to the skin for poisonous bites. Also, the wood of the jackfruit tree is used to make furniture or musical instruments.
